Hot Rod Pin-ups

Hot Rod Pin-ups

David Perry, Foreword by Robt. Williams. For as long as young men have been channeling, chopping, and hopping up rods and customs, women \151 whether loyal girlfriends or trouble-seeking 'bad girls' \151 have been an integral to their scene. In this unique portfolio evoking great 1950s pin-up artists like Vargas and Elvgren, talented photographer David Perry depicts models in and out of cherry-picked rods and customs wearing painstakingly chosen period dress and hairstyles. More than 100 photos present these modern-day pin-ups under three themes: Garage, Cruising, and Race. In addition, essays explore each topic and are also accompanied by pulp novel covers, period mags, and ads that place the photography in a historical context. Captions identify the car owners, photo location, and, where appropriate, interesting car specs and histories. \r\n

Rod and Custom in the 1950s

Rod and Custom in the 1950s

Von Dutch The Art,The Myth,The Legend

Von Dutch The Art,The Myth,The Legend

Pat Ganahl. Von Dutch is one of the most interesting characters in hot rod and popular culture history. Considered the founder of \147modern\148 pinstriping, he was a prominent character in many of the rodding magazines of the late \14550s, and his fame endured long after he apparently tired of it. Besides being a striper, he was a gifted artist, machinist, and gun- and knifesmith. Using stories and quotes culled from interviews, vintage photos, and images of the art and other works he left behind, this book chronicles Kenneth Howard\146s life from pinstriping beatnik to bus-dwelling hermit. Where it can, this book sets the record straight on Von Dutch the man, but in many cases conflicting stories will serve to illustrate the contrary, colorful, and sometimes difficult nature of Von Dutch the legend. This book is a must-have for fans of hot rodding and hot rod culture!\r\n

Edelbrock: Made in U.S.A.

Edelbrock: Made in U.S.A.

Tom Madigan, with foreword by Benny Parson, NASCAR champion. The Edelbrock Corporation emerged from a young mechanic\146s dream in Southern California during the earliest years of the American love affair with the automobile. One of the central figures of the hot rod culture that began before World War II and blossomed after the war, Vic Edelbrock, Sr. built his company around a simple philosophy: never overextend yourself, and never put your name on a product that hasn\146t been tested and proven true. When Vic Edelbrock, Jr. took over after his father\146s death, he stayed true to the family philosophy while incorporating progressive marketing plans to grow the company into a corporate giant. It is the last family owned automobile aftermarket company in the industry.\r\n

\r\nEdelbrock Made in USA is the story of the company\146s growth from a simple shop at the rear of a gas station to an American institution. It is at the heart of the history of the earliest drag racers and land speed racers, it is woven into the early days of NASCAR, and it flourishes today in the cars owned by enthusiasts and ordinary drivers across America who boast Edelbrock equipment. It is the story of a company whose influence not only helped shape automotive performance, but also led the automotive aftermarket industry in addressing and conforming to the clean air and safety regulations that have emerged over the past 35 years. And it is the story of an iconic family business that has preserved its values and its spirit of independence, creativity, philanthropy, and fun over three generations.\r\n

Gasser Wars: Drag Racing\'s

Gasser Wars: Drag Racing\'s "Street" Classes: 1955-1970

In the late 1950s, thousands of street legal hot rods participated in organized drag races across the country - they ran in three major classes: Gas, Modified Production, and Modified Sports. As the racers got more serious, these cars were street legal in appearance only. Yeah, they had headlights, taillights, and interiors, but they were full-on race cars, with huge blown Hemi engines, wide racing slicks, raised front suspensions. Racers soon discovered that small, lightweight cars were the fastest, and the classic Gasser was born - cars like the Stone Woods & Cook \'40 Willys.

Because these cars resembled street vehicles, they had a huge fan base, and their short wheelbases and wildly overpowered engines made them exciting to watch. And, as cam manufacturers began sponsoring cars and touting their accomplishments in ads, the 'Gasser Wars' were born. Thousands of spectators flocked to events where the top Gassers in the country would face off in grudge matches. Some cars even raced internationally in Europe and Australia. These were among the most popular and exciting racers of the era - many of the top original cars have been restored and are now valuable museum pieces, and the 'Gasser' look is popular again among hot rodders.

Funny Cars

Funny Cars

Today\'s funny cars, the loud and brash spawn of the factory experimental cars that campaigned dragstrips in the mid-1960s, put on one of the best shows in drag racing. They have more appeal than rail dragsters, and their explosive acceleration never fails in bringing a crowd to its feet. This colorful book examines the evolution of funny cars from the 1960s to present and features interviews with legendary drivers like Don Nicholson, Don Prudhomme, and Dale Armstrong. Author Robert Genat delved deeply into the National Hot Rod Association archives to come up with a worthy tribute to the over-the-top spectacle which is a staple of televised motorsport and attracts 2.5 million fans to the dragstrip each year. \r\nSftbd., 8 1/4 x 9, 96 pages, 80 color ill.
